KUALA LUMPUR – The successful hosting of the inaugural Trilateral Summit between ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China marks a defining moment in regional diplomacy a clear signal of the deepening trust and growing strategic cooperation among the three power blocs.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the summit as a major milestone in reshaping regional collaboration to better reflect the current global power dynamics.
“This summit symbolises the strength of regional unity and the rising influence of collective leadership. Its positive ripple effects will surely be felt across the globe,” he said.
Speaking during his keynote address at the official opening of the 46th ASEAN Summit (Plenary) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today, Anwar underlined the importance of preserving a strong multilateral system.
“Most importantly, we must continue to uphold multilateralism and ensure that the ASEAN-GCC-China geo-economic model remains a powerful force in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for our region and our people,” he said.
As the current Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia has adopted the theme “A Future-Ready ASEAN: Sustaining Unity, Advancing for All” a theme rooted in the values of inclusivity and sustainability.
“This is not just a slogan it is a shared responsibility. Our vision for ASEAN’s future rests on two key pillars: equitable and sustainable growth, and long-term resilience,” said Anwar, stressing that these principles must be deeply embedded into the region’s agenda and vision.
He expressed Malaysia’s appreciation for the collective support shown by fellow ASEAN member states in advancing this vision, noting that such unity is essential in navigating the complex challenges of today’s world.
Today’s summit agenda began with the 46th ASEAN Plenary, followed by intensive discussions among leaders focused on regional priorities, current challenges, and strengthening solidarity across Southeast Asia.
The day also featured high-level dialogues between ASEAN leaders and representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN youth delegates, and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC).
The highlight of the summit was the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, a landmark document that sets the strategic benchmark for the next phase of ASEAN’s development journey. -MalayaDailyToday
