KUALA LUMPUR – An e-hailing driver pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to murder a 62-year-old woman by setting her on fire with petrol at a number forecast outlet in Kepong earlier this month.
The accused, Ang Kam Tong, 59, entered his plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Datin Surita Budin.
According to the charge sheet, Ang is accused of attempting to murder Gan Siew Teen by dousing her with petrol and setting her ablaze, resulting in severe injuries.
The offence was allegedly committed at a betting shop in Taman Pusat Kepong at around 7.51 am on Aug 9.
The charge framed under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Shakila Mohd Shariff requested the court to deny bail, citing the severity of the victim’s third-degree burn injuries and police reports indicating that the accused had attempted to evade arrest.
However, defence counsel Lee Keng Fatt pleaded for bail, stating that his client is unmarried, works as an e-hailing driver without a fixed income, and that his siblings were prepared to act as guarantors.
Judge Surita allowed Ang bail at RM15,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 25 for document submission. -MalayaDailyToday
