SABAK BERNAM – BBSB Holdings Sdn Bhd and Meranti Budiman Sdn Bhd have recorded one million manhours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI) for the Sungai Air Tawar Road and Bridge project connecting Selangor and Perak, marking a major milestone in occupational safety and health (OSH).
The achievement was celebrated during a ceremony officiated by Deputy Director of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Selangor, Muhammad Nizam Ali, representing the leadership of DOSH Selangor and Perak.
Muhammad Nizam said the achievement reflected strong commitment towards workplace safety and health practices throughout the project.
“Every hour without incident is not achieved by chance, but through systematic planning, continuous monitoring and strong commitment from management to workers on the ground,” he said.
He added that workplace accidents often result in lengthy investigations, court proceedings and operational disruptions that could otherwise be avoided through stronger prevention measures.
The event was held in conjunction with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, celebrated annually on April 28 to promote safer and healthier workplaces globally.
Muhammad Nizam also revealed that Selangor recorded seven workplace fatalities as of March this year, with five cases involving the construction sector.
In addition, the state also recorded 16 permanent disability cases, 524 non-permanent disability cases, 36 dangerous occurrence cases and 576 occupational disease cases.
According to him, the statistics showed the construction industry remains a high-risk sector requiring continuous commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen safety compliance and prevention culture.
Apart from workplace safety, the project developers also reinforced their environmental sustainability efforts through the “1001 Mangrove Planting – One Tree, A Million Hopes” initiative.
Executive Director of BBSB Holdings Sdn Bhd, Tan Tze Tung, said the programme aimed to ensure infrastructure development progresses alongside environmental conservation, particularly around the Sungai Bernam estuary affected by the bridge construction works.
The initiative is implemented in collaboration with the Global Environment Centre, Sahabat Bakau, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah.
A total of 1,001 mangrove trees comprising several species will be planted across a 0.5-acre area at the Sungai Bernam estuary in two phases running until the end of 2027.
The programme is expected to contribute towards ecosystem restoration, including habitats for fireflies and crabs, while supporting eco-tourism activities in the area.
The ceremony also featured awards presented to contractors recognised for excellence in occupational safety and health assessments through SHASSIC and SPAS systems. -MalayaDailyToday
