MUMBAI – Iconic Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined generations of music lovers, has died at the age of 92.
With a career spanning more than seven decades, Asha recorded over 11,000 songs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil and Bengali, making her one of the most prolific singers in music history.
Born on September 8, 1933 in Sangli, Maharashtra, she was the daughter of renowned classical musician Pt Deenanath Mangeshkar.
Asha began her musical journey at a young age, recording her first song, Chala Chala Nav Bala, for the film Majha Bal in 1943 when she was just 10.
Her early years in the industry saw her lending her voice to chorus tracks in Hindi films such as Chunariya and Andhon Ki Duniya in 1948, before landing her first solo playback song in Raat Ki Rani (1949).
Over the decades, Asha rose to become one of the most versatile voices in Indian cinema, effortlessly navigating genres from classical and ghazal to pop and cabaret. Her songs not only dominated Bollywood but also made a lasting impact in regional industries, including Tamil cinema, where she collaborated with leading composers like Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman.
Among her most celebrated Tamil tracks are Munbe Vaa (Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, 2006) and September Madham (Alaipayuthey, 2000), which introduced her voice to a new generation of listeners.
Asha’s passing marks the end of an era, but her music rich, expressive and timeless will continue to echo across generations worldwide. -MalayaDailyToday
