KUALA LUMPUR – DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has urged an immediate end to the public spat between Lim Guan Eng and Chow Kon Yeow over Penang’s new land tax rates, stressing that party discipline must be restored.
He said the DAP central leadership is deeply concerned by the ongoing dispute between Guan Eng and Kon Yeow, describing it as unhealthy and inappropriate in handling internal differences on public policy matters.
“This is not the proper way to address internal disagreements, especially at a time when the country is facing geopolitical and economic uncertainties,” he said in a statement today.
Loke said Guan Eng, as a former DAP secretary-general and former chief minister, should fully appreciate the importance of party discipline and utilise internal channels to voice any concerns.
“Differences of opinion, particularly from backbenchers on state government decisions, should not be aired publicly in a manner that undermines Kon Yeow and the state government,” he said.
At the same time, he noted that Kon Yeow, as chief minister, must take seriously the concerns raised by Guan Eng, as they involve public interest and reflect feedback from various stakeholders.
He said while a review of land tax rates in commercial zones may be necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of the state government, the approach must be balanced and considerate.
“In particular, land tax involving educational institutions such as public schools should not be increased excessively, and a nominal rate should be applied,” he said.
Loke stressed that the public dispute between Guan Eng and Kon Yeow must come to an end, adding that he will convene a meeting involving both leaders to resolve the matter amicably.
“Our focus must remain on serving the people and safeguarding the public interest. Party leaders must refrain from public bickering and instead work together constructively in the best interests of the rakyat,” he said. -MalayaDailyToday
