KUALA LUMPUR – Another senior officer of the Malaysian Armed Forces was charged in the Sessions Court today with criminal breach of trust involving RM5 million from the Armed Forces welfare fund, amid a series of recent court cases involving high-ranking military personnel.
The accused, Mohamed Fauzi Kamis, 56, the Chief of Staff at the Joint Forces Headquarters, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Judge Suzana Hussin.
According to the charge, Mohamed Fauzi was entrusted with RM5 million belonging to the Armed Forces Welfare Fund (Tabung Kebajikan Angkatan Tentera, TKAT) and allegedly misappropriated the money for unauthorised investment purposes.
The offence was said to have been committed on Nov 27, 2023, at the Ministry of Defence in Kuala Lumpur.
The prosecution said the accused was responsible for managing the fund at the material time in his capacity as Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel Services and chairman of the TKAT investment committee.
The charge was framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of between two and 20 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutors proposed bail at RM300,000 with one surety and requested that the accused surrender his passport, citing the seriousness of the offence and his frequent overseas travel.
The court allowed bail with conditions, including the surrender of the accused’s passport, and fixed March 16 for mention.
The case is the latest in a string of recent prosecutions involving senior members of the armed forces, reflecting heightened scrutiny over the management of military funds. -MalayaDailyToday
