KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying has urged the public to reject the normalization of domestic violence following the tragic death of Tan Kah Ming, a Malaysian woman believed to have been killed in a domestic abuse incident in Perth, Australia.
Expressing her deepest condolences to the victim’s family and children, Lim stressed that domestic violence is a severe crime rather than a private matter that victims should bear alone.
“Domestic violence is not a personal issue that should be hidden or borne by oneself, but a serious form of violence that cannot be normalized under any circumstances,” Lim said in a statement posted on her official Facebook page today.
She highlighted that domestic abuse inflicts profound harm not only on victims but also on children, families, and broader societal well-being, calling for collective responsibility in preventing abuse and safeguarding victims.
Lim reassured individuals facing domestic abuse that help and protection are available, urging victims to reach out to trusted individuals or official support systems.
She highlighted that in Malaysia, the Talian Kasih hotline (15999) and its dedicated WhatsApp service (019-261 5999) operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide immediate support, counseling, and emergency referrals.
She also called on family members, friends, and neighbors to remain vigilant against signs of domestic violence and offer non-judgmental support centered on victim safety.
Lim reaffirmed that the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) will continue strengthening protection mechanisms under the Domestic Violence Act 1994 (Act 521), including providing protection orders and temporary safe shelters.
Addressing the ongoing investigation into Tan’s death, Lim stated that she respects the legal jurisdiction and investigative processes of Australian authorities, urging the public to grant privacy to the bereaved family as they grieve. -MalayaDailyToday
