KUALA LUMPUR – Batik Air is strengthening air connectivity across East Malaysia with the introduction of two new direct services between Kota Kinabalu (BKI) and Kuching (KCH), as well as Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan (SDK), commencing 15 December 2025.
These new routes reflect the steady rise in demand for seamless intra-Sabah–Sarawak travel and support efforts to enhance regional connectivity ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). Both services are expected to boost domestic tourism, facilitate business travel, and create more efficient links between key cities in Borneo.
The introduction of these direct connections highlights the strategic importance of Kota Kinabalu as a northern Borneo hub, strengthening links to Sarawak’s capital and to Sandakan, one of Sabah’s most prominent gateways for nature, heritage and eco-tourism.
Kuching, renowned for its rich cultural tapestry, historic charm and thriving culinary scene, continues to attract leisure and corporate travellers seeking authentic experiences. The direct seven-times weekly BKI–KCH service is anticipated to drive greater movement between Sabah and Sarawak, encouraging collaboration and supporting economic activity across both states.

Sandakan, known for its world-famous wildlife sanctuaries, serene islands and significant conservation efforts, remains one of Sabah’s most compelling destinations. The seven-times weekly BKI–SDK service improves access for travellers exploring Sandakan’s environmental attractions and strengthens connectivity for local communities.
Aligned with its commitment to enhance connectivity across East Malaysia, Batik Air has extended the ‘Family Vacay Starts at Borneo’ Campaign, offering all-in one-way fares starting as low as MYR 69 to key cities across Sabah and Sarawak. The campaign is available for bookings from now until 30 November 2025, for travel up to 30 January 2026.

Batik Air Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, expressed his enthusiasm about the enhanced domestic network: “We are delighted to introduce these new direct flights, which reflect our commitment to supporting Sabah and Sarawak’s growing travel needs. Strengthening connectivity within Borneo is a priority, and Kota Kinabalu, as a regional operating hub in East Malaysia, creates easier access between important destinations while enhancing convenience for our guests.”
“Batik Air is focused on building a comprehensive network across East Malaysia that supports long-term economic growth and tourism development. By connecting key cities more effectively, we aim to unlock new opportunities for business, cultural exchange, and travel experiences throughout the region, reinforcing Sabah and Sarawak as vibrant destinations for all travellers,” he added.

Looking ahead, the airline is introducing direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Singapore (BKI–SIN), commencing on 12 February 2026, further enhancing Sabah’s connectivity to key international destinations. The network already includes three-times weekly direct BKI–ICN service, providing travellers with seamless access to Seoul (Incheon), South Korea.
