SUBANG JAYA – A massive gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights yesterday left a trail of destruction, damaging 87 premises and affecting hundreds of residents and vehicles.
Subang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat, said that a total of 235 premises, including shops and residential units, were impacted by the devastating blast.
“Of the 235 premises, 87 sustained fire damage, while 148 others were damaged by extreme heat from the explosion,” he told reporters today.
The explosion also wreaked havoc on vehicles parked in the area, with 399 vehicles affected. Of these, 225 vehicles were damaged by fire, while 174 sustained heat damage.
Victims and Relief Efforts
A total of 111 victims are currently receiving medical treatment, with 80 being treated at government hospitals and 31 at private hospitals.
Among the victims, 13 are warded in the red zone due to severe injuries, 55 in the yellow zone with moderate injuries, and 43 in the green zone for minor injuries.
To accommodate those displaced, 485 victims have been relocated to a relief center at the Putra Heights Mosque, while 44 victims have been placed at a nearby multipurpose hall.
Cause and Investigation
Initial reports suggest that the explosion occurred during excavation work in the area, although the cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed. Authorities, including the police, Petronas, and other relevant agencies, are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
The explosion has raised questions about safety compliance, as social media users speculate that construction activities may have compromised the underground gas pipeline. Subang Jaya Mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim has since confirmed that the project had undergone proper approval processes, including clearance from Petronas and the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK).
Past Incidents and Safety Concerns
This is not the first time Putra Heights has experienced a gas-related incident. In 2018, a minor gas leak in the area caused panic among residents but did not result in significant damage. Authorities have since been urged to reassess safety protocols for construction near critical infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
The explosion, which occurred just as residents were celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri, has left the community in shock and mourning. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing as authorities work to support the affected families and restore the area. -MalayaDailyToday
