KUALA LUMPUR – Hannah Thomas, the daughter of former Malaysian attorney-general Tommy Thomas, is stepping into the political spotlight in Australia, mounting a challenge against interim prime minister Anthony Albanese for the parliamentary seat of Grayndler.
Running under the Greens party banner, Hannah who migrated to Australia in 2009 as an international student is the youngest candidate in the contest. Speaking to The Feed SBS, she described her candidacy as “an insane thing to be doing, but also extremely exciting.”
Grayndler has been a stronghold for Albanese since 1996. However, Hannah’s entry has stirred attention not just because of her youth or family background, but due to her outspoken activism for Gaza and refugee rights.
Despite running against the prime minister, the Labor Party has placed Hannah as its second choice on its how-to-vote cards a decision that has drawn criticism in Australia, given her strong stance against Albanese’s handling of international and domestic issues.
Australia uses a preferential voting system where voters rank candidates. If no candidate secures more than 50 percent of first-choice votes, preferences from lower-ranked candidates are distributed, meaning Hannah could still benefit indirectly from Labor votes if rankings align.
In an interview published on the Greens’ website, Hannah said the Albanese government’s inaction over the Israeli military actions in Gaza was a major factor that pushed her to contest.

“Watching a live-streamed genocide in the electorate of the prime minister was too much to bear,” she said.
“There are very few people who possess the power to restrain the Israeli war machine as it slaughters countless Palestinians, but our local member was one of them. Instead, he failed to take action and should be held to account.”
Beyond Gaza, Hannah also criticised Albanese’s policies on refugees and migrants, blaming him for fueling anti-immigrant sentiment amid Australia’s housing and cost-of-living crises.
Australia is set to go to the polls on May 3, with Hannah’s candidacy injecting an unexpected element into an election that could reshape the country’s political landscape and challenging even the most entrenched incumbents. -MalayaDailyToday
