KUALA LUMPUR – In just two years since its establishment in 2023, the Malaysian Recyclers Association (MRA) has rapidly emerged as a driving force in strengthening Malaysia’s recycling industry and propelling it onto the global stage.
Under the leadership of its President, Dato Joe Saravanan, a veteran with nearly 30 years of experience in the recycling sector, MRA is setting new benchmarks for the industry’s future.
Founded with the vision to fortify the metal recycling sector, champion the circular economy, and promote environmental sustainability, MRA is uniquely led by a dynamic multiracial team, reflecting Malaysia’s spirit of unity and inclusiveness.
From its inception, MRA has been committed to connecting Malaysia’s recycling industry with international markets, advocating for progressive policies, providing training to industry players, and raising greater public awareness on the importance of sustainable recycling practices.
“Our vision is to position Malaysia as a competitive and respected player in the global recycling arena. Recycling is not just about managing waste; it is about building a stronger, greener economy for the future,” said Joe Saravanan in a recent interview.

He added that MRA’s multiracial leadership team stands as a testament to Malaysia’s strength in diversity, and this spirit has enabled the association to move quickly and cohesively on both the domestic and international fronts.
As part of its international expansion efforts, MRA has successfully formalized strategic partnerships by signing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with several leading global recycling bodies.
These include the Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI), the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), known as ISRI from the United States, the Bureau of Middle East Recycling (BMR), and the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) based in Europe.
These partnerships mark significant milestones in MRA’s mission to create a robust transcontinental network, opening up new markets, sharing innovations, and elevating industry standards in Malaysia.
Looking ahead, MRA is poised to further strengthen its global footprint with upcoming plans to sign an MOU with the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC).
This strategic move will bolster Malaysia’s engagement in the European recycling sector and offer even more opportunities for Malaysian recyclers to tap into new business ecosystems.
Domestically, MRA maintains strong collaboration with key government ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), and the Malaysia Steel Institute (MSI).
Through these partnerships, MRA ensures that the recycling sector receives the necessary policy support to thrive and remain competitive in an increasingly globalized economy.
Reflecting on MRA’s rapid progress, Joe Saravanan remarked, “We believe that recycling is not just an environmental necessity; it is a catalyst for economic transformation.
“By investing in recycling, we are investing in jobs, innovation, and a sustainable future for Malaysia. MRA’s goal is to champion this movement on a national and global scale.”

Today, MRA stands not only as a key advocate for environmental stewardship but also as a vital contributor to Malaysia’s green economic growth.
By reducing dependency on raw materials, creating new jobs, attracting green investments, and fostering innovation, the recycling industry is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s future ready economy.
With its clear vision, strong multiracial leadership, and growing international alliances, MRA is confidently driving Malaysia’s recycling sector into a new era of global relevance and sustainable success. -MalayaDailyToday
