KUALA LUMPUR – DAP National Advisor Tan Kok Wai and DAP National Treasurer Fong Kui Lun have announced their decision to withdraw from contesting in the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) election at the 18th DAP National Congress, scheduled for 16 March.
In a joint statement, they cited four key reasons for their decision, emphasizing the need for leadership transition, their confidence in the party’s current leadership, and their gratitude to party members who have contributed to DAP’s success.
Time for New Leadership to Take the Helm
Tan and Fong highlighted that they have dedicated nearly five decades to DAP’s struggle, witnessing its transformation from a long-standing opposition party to a key partner in the coalition government.
“This long journey gives us a great sense of pride and satisfaction. Today, DAP is blessed with many talented individuals, and we have a well-planned leadership succession strategy. Now the time has come to give more room to the new generation of leaders to play a more pivotal role in leading the party to even greater heights,” they said.
Confidence in DAP’s Core Leadership
Both leaders also expressed full confidence in the party’s core leadership, whom they believe have demonstrated a well-coordinated strategy in both party development and election preparedness.
“Their approach reflects strong synergy between internal and external efforts, keeping pace with contemporary developments. Their competence gives us the assurance that the party’s future is in capable hands,” they stated.
Adapting to a Changing Political Landscape
Tan and Fong acknowledged that political dynamics evolve over time, requiring different leadership styles for each generation. However, they stressed that reform must always align with societal progress and national priorities.
“DAP’s core leadership demonstrates dynamism, seamlessly bridging the past and the future while embracing innovation and progress. We fully recognize their leadership capabilities and talents,” they said.

Tribute to Party Veterans and Grassroots Members
Expressing deep appreciation to all those who have contributed to DAP’s success, Tan and Fong acknowledged the sacrifices made by party veterans and grassroots members.
“For the past five decades, we have been committed to the democratic process, striving to realize the vision of a free, just, equitable, and diverse ‘Malaysian Malaysia.’ Many have fought tirelessly and made immense sacrifices for this cause.
“While some of us have had the privilege of serving multiple terms in Parliament and state assemblies, we must also recognize the countless ‘unsung heroes’ within DAP—ordinary members who have worked selflessly behind the scenes. DAP stands strong today because of their unwavering dedication,” they said.
Tan and Fong affirmed that the party belongs to all its members and expressed confidence in its continued success under the next generation of leaders.
“We remain forever indebted to all our comrades. History will not forget each of your contributions, no matter how big or small,” they concluded. -MalayaDailyToday
