KUANTAN – The views expressed by Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah regarding the proposed approval for river sand exports in Pahang should be carefully considered by the Federal Government in the interest of the people and long-term flood mitigation efforts in the state.
Community activist and MHO Chief Public Relations Officer, Daniel Khoo, said the Regent’s remarks carried strong justification as Pahang is home to the longest river system in Peninsular Malaysia, which requires continuous management and maintenance.
According to him, controlled dredging and management of river sand deposits could not only improve water flow, but also generate additional revenue for both the state and the country.
“When sand sediment builds up excessively, rivers become shallower and this can increase the risk of flooding, especially during the monsoon season.
“That is why the Regent’s views deserve serious attention as they are aimed at safeguarding the wellbeing of the people, particularly residents in Pahang who face recurring floods almost every year,” he said in a statement.
Khoo added that proper river sand management could also benefit sectors such as logistics, transportation and construction, while creating economic opportunities for local companies.

He said systematic dredging efforts could help improve river flow and reduce pressure on flood-prone areas across the state.
“Everyone wants to see long-term solutions that benefit both the people and the state. What is important is ensuring that any implementation is carried out in a controlled, transparent and environmentally responsible manner,” he said.
He also expressed the view that the proposal should be evaluated comprehensively as it involves not only economic opportunities, but also river management and flood mitigation measures.
Earlier, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah reportedly expressed disappointment after efforts by Pahang to increase state revenue through river sand exports had yet to receive approval from the Federal Government. -MalayaDailyToday
