KOTA KINABALU – Sabah’s economy is expected to remain on a positive growth trajectory despite mounting global uncertainties triggered by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the confidence is anchored on the implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 development blueprint, which will drive the state’s agenda over the next five years.
He said following the conclusion of the 17th Sabah state election last November, the state government is now focused on accelerating development initiatives under the plan.
“The direction is also aligned with the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) from this year until 2030. I am confident Sabah’s economy will continue to grow positively despite external pressures,” he said.
Hajiji said this when delivering a speech at the state investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the 75th birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Monday.

He acknowledged that global geopolitical tensions have disrupted oil supply chains, potentially triggering a wider energy crisis that could also impact Malaysia.
As such, he urged the public to be prudent in spending and in the use of vehicles to ease cost pressures.
He also called on the public to use water wisely amid rising temperatures linked to the El Niño phenomenon, which could lead to prolonged dry spells.
“Avoid open burning and reduce outdoor activities during extreme heat conditions,” he said.
On the state’s economic outlook, Hajiji said Sabah is actively exploring the Blue Economy as a new growth driver under SMJ 2.0, leveraging its maritime strengths and biodiversity.
The initiative includes marine biotechnology, smart fisheries, modern mariculture, logistics and sustainable tourism, as well as river-based economic activities in rural areas.
It also covers coastal protection, mangrove and coral reef conservation, and the development of blue carbon for higher value economic returns.
“The Blue Economy, particularly in fisheries and aquaculture, is expected to generate up to RM3.25 billion annually,” he said.
He added that close cooperation between the state and federal governments will continue to be strengthened to ensure smooth and effective implementation of development programmes.
Priority projects involving infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and public welfare will be closely monitored to ensure timely completion.
Hajiji also called on all stakeholders, including civil servants and the private sector, to remain committed to driving Sabah’s progress.
“We must continue to work together to ensure the prosperity of the state and the well-being of the people,” he said. -MalayaDailyToday
