NEW DELHI – Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar, known for his intense performances and decades-long contribution to cinema, passed away at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa, NDTV reported.
The actor was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious at his home in the early hours of Thursday.
Information shared by Manipal Hospital said that the doctors were unable to revive him after attempting resuscitation for nearly 45 minutes after he was brought in.
He was officially declared dead at 5.20 am local time, hospital sources stated.
According to sources, Patekar – who was at home with his nephew Prasad Patekar – had been complaining of a headache since last night.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led tributes to the actor, praising Patekar’s versatility and outspoken personality.
Patekar portrayed characters that would `remain etched in the memory of generations’, Modi wrote on x, adding that his death had left a vast void in the artistic world’.
The veteran actor will be accorded a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to theatre and cinema, Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced on Thursday, as shared by PTI
Born on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, Patekar made his feature debut in the 1978 film Gaman before rising to prominence as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile actors across both Hindi and Marathi film industries.
Throughout a career spanning nearly five decades, he earned three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri — India’s fourth-highest civilian honor — in 2013 for his contributions to cinema and the arts.
Patekar was celebrated for his iconic roles in critically acclaimed films such as Parinda, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Raajneeti, and the award-winning Marathi drama Natsamrat, alongside mainstream commercial hits including Welcome and Taxi No. 9211.
