KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s upgraded passport featuring nearly double the current security protections will begin rolling out from June 1, as authorities move to strengthen document safety amid rising concerns over identity fraud and AI-generated manipulation.
The Immigration Department said the new Malaysian passport will contain 94 security features, a major jump from the roughly 49 features found in existing passports.
Among the new technologies introduced are enhanced holograms, ultraviolet (UV) printing and specially embedded security threads within the passport stitching, aimed at making the document significantly harder to forge or tamper with internationally.
The announcement has already sparked strong interest online, with many Malaysians expressing curiosity over the passport’s upgraded design and tighter security measures.
However, immigration authorities urged the public not to rush to replace their current passports, stressing that existing documents remain valid until their expiry dates.
To avoid overcrowding at immigration offices, the rollout will be carried out in phases beginning June 1 at selected locations including Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, UTC Wangsa Maju and Shah Alam before expanding nationwide by the end of July.
Another issue drawing attention on social media is the government’s warning against the use of AI-generated photographs for online passport applications.
As artificial intelligence tools become increasingly sophisticated in generating realistic human images, the Immigration Department said its officers are still capable of distinguishing genuine photographs from AI-created visuals.
The warning reflects growing awareness within Putrajaya over emerging digital-era threats, including identity fraud and the misuse of artificial intelligence in official national documentation.
Observers noted that the passport upgrade signals Malaysia’s broader push to strengthen international travel credibility while adapting to rapidly evolving cyber and technological risks. -MalayaDailyToday
