PETALING JAYA – A former minister has been remanded for five days to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into findings contained in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the management of Tabung Haji (TH).
The remand order was issued by Putrajaya Magistrate Ezrene Zakaria today after allowing an application by the MACC, Berita Harian reported.
The man, who is in his 60s, was arrested at about 4.30pm yesterday while having his statement recorded at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
He is believed to have been detained to assist investigations into the leasing of a TH-linked hotel in Saudi Arabia.
The RCI report, made public on July 29, detailed various weaknesses in TH’s management and operations between 2014 and 2020, including problematic investments that require a forensic audit.
The report also highlighted suspicious transactions and alleged concealment of information.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which covers soliciting or accepting bribes.
Those convicted under the provision face up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. -MalayaDailyToday
