KUALA LUMPUR – The inhumane action by the Besut District Council (MDB) in conducting a coordinated operation to capture and dispose of stray dogs in several areas of Jertih Town was carried out against a stray dog known as Kopi, who was shot dead.
Datuk N Sivakumar, The President and Patron of the Persatuan Dinamik Sinar Kasih (DSK), said that MDB’s action was inhumane because the small dog was actually pampered and did not pose a danger to the surrounding residents.
“Is this a random act in the name of stray dog complaints?” Simple question, how could this stray dog accused by the MDB be named ‘Kopi’ by the locals? Meanwhile, several video clips went viral on social media showing Kopi having fun playing with stray cats.
“The President of MDB, Mohd Sukeri Ibrahim, claimed that this integrated operation was carried out following complaints about stray dog disturbances, resulting in 131 arrests throughout the Besut area.” But is there really an operation to help reduce disturbances and dangers?
“It would be better for you to use your energy, time, and money to catch more drug addicts, illegal racers, and pickpockets who bring disaster to the people in that area rather than just killing animals that cannot communicate like humans,” he expressed to MalayaDailyToday.
Therefore, Sivakumar wants the Madani Government to review the laws related to stray animals and the regulations for capturing stray animals, including the procedures for caring for them.
“Is it difficult to defend that animal or give it to the public who want to take care of it?”
“Remember, Malaysia has agreed to no longer carry out mandatory death sentences and life imprisonment following the enforcement of the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023.” (Act 846).
“If this can be done, why not study it for God’s creatures that cannot communicate?” he asked.
He also hopes that this issue will be discussed in the Dewan Rakyat, which is currently in session.
He added, during this parliamentary session, hopefully, this issue will be brought up and discussed to find the best solution.
“This Kopi Incident has opened the eyes of the average society, including among the Malays themselves.” Many stray dogs are killed cruelly and hastily. Hope that from now on you can think before acting.
There are many solutions available that do not harm any party, including seeking advice from experts before taking action.
“I also welcome more NGOs to join in speaking out so that more ‘Kopi’ can be saved in the future,” he emphasized.
Recently, a video lasting about one minute went viral on Instagram, showing two vehicles, including a four-wheel drive belonging to the local authority (PBT), conducting an operation to eliminate stray dogs in the Besut district.
It is reported that the state Department of Veterinary Services (JPV) is currently investigating the spread of the video. – MalayaDailyToday
