KUALA LUMPUR – Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is currently unable to pay the RM50 million fine imposed as one of the conditions for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest.
His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said Najib did not have the financial means to settle the fine.
“As of today, Datuk Seri Najib himself is unable to pay it. He cannot afford to pay,” Shafee told after court proceedings involving the former prime minister here today.
Shafee said Najib’s bank accounts had been frozen, including an Affin Bank account which he said had previously been used to receive Najib’s salary as prime minister and a Member of Parliament.
In a separate development, Shafee said Najib had never sought public donations to raise funds to pay the RM50 million fine.
He said Najib was in a difficult position as he was required to pay the fine as one of the conditions of the conditional pardon, while at the same time lacking the financial resources to do so.
“He is caught in a difficult position because he is supposed to pay it, but he does not have the money,” Shafee said, adding that he did not know how much had been raised through contributions.
Meanwhile, Shafee said Najib had yet to receive the official letter on the conditional pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which would allow him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest. -MalayaDailyToday
