KUALA LUMPUR – Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, is increasingly being viewed as a potential consensus figure capable of balancing the interests of both PAS and Bersatu amid evolving dynamics within the opposition bloc.
Political analysts believe Samsuri’s growing influence within Perikatan Nasional stems from his ability to maintain a relatively moderate image while remaining acceptable to the leadership and grassroots of both parties.
The discussion surrounding his name has intensified in recent months following growing speculation over future leadership arrangements and succession planning within the coalition.
An analyst said Samsuri is increasingly seen as one of the few leaders capable of bridging internal differences without triggering major tensions between PAS and Bersatu.
“He is viewed as a stabilising figure. Compared to several other leaders within the coalition, Samsuri is seen as less confrontational and more measured in his political approach,” the analyst reportedly said.
Observers also pointed to his administrative experience in Terengganu, particularly in managing state governance and economic issues, as factors contributing to his growing credibility beyond PAS circles.
Samsuri has, over the years, cultivated an image of being policy-oriented and strategic, a contrast to the more aggressive political style often associated with parts of the opposition bloc.
Analysts believe this has helped strengthen his acceptability among leaders seeking a more unified and disciplined direction for Perikatan Nasional ahead of the next general election.
However, they cautioned that any potential leadership restructuring within the coalition would ultimately depend on negotiations among top party leaders as well as support from grassroots members.
So far, neither PAS nor Bersatu has officially indicated any plans for leadership changes within Perikatan Nasional. -MalayaDailyToday
