KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Indian Skills Initiative (MISI), under the purview of the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA), is proving that skills-based training can lead to immediate and stable employment. HRD Corp, the implementing agency of MISI, highlights the programme’s success in equipping Malaysian Indians with industry-relevant expertise, transforming lives and career prospects.
One such success story is Kumaresan, an 18-year-old graduate of MISI’s Culinary Arts – Western Food programme in Perai, Penang. Coming from a humble background, Kumaresan never imagined that his passion for cooking could turn into a sustainable career. However, upon completing the five-day intensive training, he secured employment at a prestigious restaurant with a salary beyond his expectations.
“I’m so grateful for this initiative by Kerajaan Madani. I never thought I could earn this much at 18. Now I can help my family with what I earn,” said Kumaresan, emphasizing the programme’s impact on his life.
His journey is a testament to the effectiveness of competency-based training. While many of his peers continue searching for jobs, Kumaresan’s story underscores how the right skills can lead to immediate employment opportunities.
“People say it’s hard to get a job now, but I proved them wrong. With a MISI competency programme, you can secure a job easily – and with a good salary. Thank you, Kerajaan Madani!” he added.
MISI’s training, which caters to school leavers, homemakers, eatery owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs, is designed to enhance employability and economic empowerment. The initiative has received strong backing from YB Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang State EXCO & ADUN Perai, who attended a session in his constituency and commended the efforts of YB Steven Sim Chee Keong, Minister of Human Resources, for championing skills development within the Malaysian Indian community.
Since its launch in September 2024, MISI has rolled out over 100 training programmes, benefiting more than 6,000 Malaysian Indians. The initiative was officially announced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a special Labour Day interview on May 1, 2024, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to skills training, backed by a RM30 million funding pledge from KESUMA, MITRA, and the Ministry of Finance.
HRD Corp, as the key driver of MISI, has strategically designed the initiative to address industry demands. Training programmes cover a diverse range of high-growth sectors, including Artificial Intelligence, Smart Farming, Cybersecurity, Drone Technology, Retort Technology, Superbike and EV Maintenance, Data Science, and more.
