KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to conduct a detailed investigation into complaints regarding three private radio hosts allegedly mocking a religious ceremony in a video uploaded on social media.
Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, stated that MCMC must also summon the company and the management of the radio station to its headquarters for a full explanation.
“We have received complaints from various parties regarding the actions of radio station staff mocking a religious ceremony in a video uploaded on social media this morning.
“Therefore, I have instructed MCMC to conduct a thorough investigation, including summoning the company and radio station management to provide further clarification at MCMC’s headquarters,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, a video of three radio hosts mocking the kavadi dance, a sacred ritual performed by Hindu devotees during Thaipusam, went viral.
However, they have since apologized for the controversial video, which was accused of disrespecting the religion.
The video, which has now been removed from the station’s social media platform, showed one of the hosts mimicking the kavadi dance while chanting “Vel Vel”, followed by laughter.
The clip sparked widespread criticism, with many condemning it as an insult to Hindu traditions. -MalayaDailyToday
