KUALA LUMPUR – Four friends with a deep passion for classic Volkswagen (VW) vehicles are making history with an epic 25,000-kilometer road trip to Germany in two vintage VW Kombis.
Fueled by passion and adventure, this journey—organized by Andy’s Volkswagen Owners Club (AVOC)—is more than just a road trip; it’s a tribute to timeless automotive heritage.

Their ultimate destination? Wolfsburg, Germany—the birthplace of VW—where they will take part in the prestigious Wolfsburg Classic VW Owners Gathering.
A Symbol of Freedom & Adventure
The Volkswagen Kombi is more than just a vehicle; it represents freedom, adventure, and an enduring legacy in car culture. Since its introduction in the 1950s, the Kombi has captured the hearts of millions worldwide, becoming an icon for road trippers and explorers across generations.

This spirit of exploration is exactly what drives the adventurous quartet behind this incredible expedition: Andy Thanabalan, Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent, Lavarn Senthiraja, and Praven Subash. Driving a 1978 VW Kombi and a 1981 VW Kombi Double Cab, they will traverse multiple continents over the next three months.

According to Andy, founder and president of AVOC, this is more than just a personal adventure—it’s a tribute to VW’s legacy.
“Germany is the heart of the VW story, and we want to bring these Kombis ‘home’ while proving that passion and determination can take us across continents,” he shared.

Beyond the thrill of the journey, the team hopes to make history for Malaysia’s VW community and inspire other enthusiasts to chase their dreams.
“We want the world to see Malaysia’s deep love for classic Volkswagens and encourage others to dream big,” Andy added.

An Ambitious Route Across 16 Countries
The convoy’s adventure spans 16 countries, including Thailand, Laos, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

With an estimated fuel cost of RM17,000 per vehicle, the team is well-prepared, carrying spare parts and relying on their mechanical expertise to handle any technical hiccups along the way.
The journey isn’t just about reaching Wolfsburg—they will also attend VW events in Germany and Belgium, connecting with Volkswagen enthusiasts across Europe.
Leaving a Piece of History Behind
The adventure kicked off last Thursday, and as of now, they have already made it to Thailand.

However, the most surprising twist? Once they reach Germany, they won’t be bringing the Kombis back home!
“We plan to leave the vehicles in Germany for a while and return next year to continue exploring more countries,” Andy revealed.

After completing their European adventure within the next three years, the two iconic Kombis will be shipped back to Malaysia from the UK or the Netherlands.
A Journey of Passion, Persistence & Dreams
With every kilometer traveled, these four VW lovers are proving that dreams can turn into reality with determination and passion. Their journey is not just about the cars—it’s a celebration of adventure, friendship, and the enduring spirit of the Volkswagen Kombi legend. -MalayaDailyToday
