KUALA LUMPUR – Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) has taken another bold step in redefining the role of public libraries through the launch of the Creative Play Section (Ruang Permainan Kreatif) at Pustaka KL @ Bandar Baru Sentul. The initiative aims to transform traditional library spaces into vibrant community hubs that foster both learning and joy, particularly for children from underserved backgrounds.
The signing ceremony for the project took place at Anjung Singgahsana DBKL and was attended by key representatives from all collaborating partners. The agreement was inked by Kuala Lumpur Mayor, YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr.) Maimunah Mohd Sharif, alongside Dato’ Yeoh Soo Min, Trustee of YTL Foundation; Dato’ Hamidah Maktar, Executive Director of Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd; and Dr Raihan Mohamed, Vice President of Toy Libraries Malaysia (TLM).
The Creative Play Section represents a strategic collaboration between DBKL, YTL Foundation, Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd, and Toy Libraries Malaysia, reflecting a shared commitment to holistic child development and community empowerment. The new play space will combine elements of learning and play, providing an engaging environment for children to develop literacy, numeracy, creativity, and emotional intelligence; all through the power of play.
In particular, the facility is designed to benefit children from low-income (B40) families, providing them access to high-quality, educational toys in a safe and nurturing environment. Through play-based learning, the initiative supports early childhood development beyond academics, focusing on social interaction and emotional growth.
“This project is a symbol of our continued commitment to inclusive and people-centered education. We are creating not just a learning space, but a joyful space — a space where children can grow, imagine, and thrive,” said Dato’ Seri Maimunah during the event.
YTL Foundation and Sentul Raya Sdn Bhd will support the initiative with funding and expertise, while Toy Libraries Malaysia will lend its knowledge in developing play-based learning strategies. The collaboration also seeks to promote the library as a modern learning hub that is accessible, welcoming, and relevant to the diverse needs of urban communities.
With this initiative, DBKL envisions Pustaka KL not just as a traditional library, but as a dynamic space for families to connect, communities to grow, and young minds to be nurtured.
The Creative Play Section is scheduled to open to the public later this year, with plans for regular storytelling sessions, interactive workshops, and community engagement activities. This marks a significant shift in how public facilities are being reimagined to serve future generations in Kuala Lumpur. -MalayaDailyToday
