KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm alert for several areas in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, with the unstable weather expected to persist until 1pm today.
In a statement this morning, MetMalaysia said thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast in Pahang (Bera); Selangor (Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang); the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya; and Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah and Jempol).
In Sabah, similar conditions are expected in the Sandakan division including Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan as well as the Kudat district.
The department also reported the formation of a tropical depression detected at 8am at latitude 9.5° North and longitude 128.2° East, approximately 219 kilometres northeast of Gingoog City in the Philippines. The system is moving westward at 10 km/h with maximum winds of 56 km/h.
MetMalaysia stressed, however, that the tropical depression poses no significant impact to Malaysia, with the nearest distance recorded at about 1,211 kilometres from Semporna, Sabah. -MalayaDailyToday
