KUALA LUMPUR – The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing, praised the exceptional commitment of MOTAC staff while calling for renewed strategic energy to elevate Malaysia’s tourism and cultural sectors.
Speaking at the MOTAC Appreciation Ceremony 2025, Tiong paid tribute to the unsung heroes behind Malaysia’s tourism machinery, civil servants whose quiet dedication fuels national growth.
“Excellence is not just about outcomes. It’s about spirit, integrity, and unwavering dedication,” said Tiong, as he congratulated 251 recipients of the 2024 Excellent Service Award (APC).

He urged these role models to continue championing the principles of Malaysia MADANI, the government’s vision for a civil and compassionate nation, and to carry forward their excellence as Malaysia gears up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026).
Also honoured were 52 MOTAC retirees, celebrated for their decades-long contributions to the country through various facets of tourism, arts, and culture.
“Though retired, your wisdom remains a national asset,” said Tiong. “There’s still so much you can offer, especially as we amplify our cultural tourism narrative in the lead-up to VM2026.”

Tiong shared encouraging figures from the first quarter of 2025: Malaysia welcomed 10.1 million international visitors, an early sign of positive momentum. While he acknowledged that Malaysia currently leads its ASEAN neighbours, he cautioned against complacency.
“This is a fantastic start, but staying ahead requires strategy, persistence and innovation,” he stressed.
Beyond numbers, Tiong turned the spotlight on Malaysia’s handicraft industry, urging transformation in both design and market approach.
“Our crafts must evolve to be bold, modern, and high-quality. We can no longer depend solely on tradition. We must think globally and act creatively.”

He called on artisans, agencies and stakeholders to reimagine how Malaysian craftsmanship can attract international attention, suggesting that well-designed, locally made products could become both cultural ambassadors and economic drivers.
Tiong closed his address with a rallying cry to the MOTAC team and its agencies to remain focused, adaptive, and passionate.
“Let’s ensure our tourism, arts and culture sectors remain not just relevant, but remarkable. Together, we can enhance Malaysia’s shine to unprecedented levels.” -MalayaDailyToday
