KUALA LUMPUR – A new chapter in Malaysian aviation unfolded today as Batik Air launched its first international flight out of Subang Airport, connecting Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) directly to Bangkok, Thailand: a significant move that redefines regional air travel convenience for Klang Valley residents.
Marking a milestone in the airline’s growing footprint, the inaugural Subang-Bangkok flight was greeted with a modest yet meaningful welcome ceremony, symbolising both a fresh start and a strategic shift in Malaysia’s aviation narrative.
The development also signals Batik Air’s intention to revitalise Subang Airport as a city-centric aviation hub, providing a quicker, more accessible alternative to KLIA. With the launch, travellers headed to Thailand’s vibrant capital can now shave off precious travel time, with SZB located just 20 minutes from downtown Kuala Lumpur.

The Bangkok launch isn’t Batik Air’s only move. The airline simultaneously introduced a new direct service to Kuching, its second East Malaysia route from SZB, following the earlier launch of Kota Kinabalu flights. Batik Air now connects Subang to Penang, Kota Bharu, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau (via BKI), Kuching, and Bangkok – a robust web of domestic and regional connectivity that is quickly transforming Subang into a powerful regional terminal.
Batik Air CEO Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy described the dual launch as a step forward in expanding both regional and domestic accessibility.
“We’re proud to connect more cities through Subang, giving travellers easier access to the places they love, whether that’s the bustling charm of Bangkok or the cultural richness of Kuching,” he said.

A Timely Boost for Tourism and VM2026
The expansion arrives at a crucial time, as Malaysia ramps up efforts for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), a nationwide campaign aimed at rejuvenating the tourism economy.
Tourism Malaysia Director General Datuk Manoharan Periasamy praised Batik Air’s strategic foresight:
“Thailand remains one of our most vital source markets. These new routes will enhance accessibility and are key to driving up visitor arrivals as we gear up for VM2026.”

Tourism Selangor echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role this initiative plays in Visit Selangor Year 2025. With improved access, Subang Airport could become the gateway for Thai travellers eager to explore Selangor’s attractions, from eco-tourism to heritage trails, helping the state inch closer to its ambitious target of 8 million tourist arrivals.
Subang’s Resurgence as a Preferred Airport
Subang Airport’s transformation has been years in the making, and Batik Air’s investment in its services signals growing confidence in its strategic potential. Located near key commercial zones like Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam, SZB offers unmatched proximity for business and leisure travellers alike.
Its urban accessibility makes it especially attractive for short-haul regional flights, a segment Batik Air appears eager to dominate.

With five direct destinations now accessible from Subang, passengers can skip the long haul to KLIA and fly closer to home or connect easily to other Malaysian cities, boosting not just tourism but also local economies.
